My broadcast sheet is coded for a S81 steering wheel but I am not sure what it looks like. I have been doing research but all the 71 Charger pictures I've seen either have the woodgrain wheel or a Tuff wheel. The decoding books say it is a padded wheel. Can anyone tell me what it looks like? If anyone has a S81 wheel could you post a picture. Thanks!

You're on the right track!! Option number S81 wheels are SIMULATED wood grain wheels, and they are padded...at least the center cap is. This steering wheel was available for a lot of Mopars during a lot of years. HERE'S THE BASIC S81 WHEEL:AND HERE IT IS WITH A PADDED CENTER CAP:NOTE:The color of the center cap varied based on the color of the car's interior, and I believe--though I'm not positive--that the logo varied as well, depending on the car and the year, with the Mopar Pentastar being the most common. I'm no expert on the subject by any means, but this is the first time I personally have heard of anyone that had the S81 as a factory installed option on a 3rd Generation Charger!! Nice wheel for a nice car!! Jer.

That wheel is an S81 option number steering wheel....it is not specifically indigenous to any one year of Charger or for that matter any other Mopar.
In the 69 to 74 Broadcast Sheet Decoder is not only the explanation for how to add the 1 that's in your S-option box to S8 to come up with S81 (which you've obviously figured out), but on the next page is the matrix showing S81, 83, 84, 86, and 87...
And, right next to each number is the description (in this case S81 shows "Simulated Wood Rim Steering Wheel"), and right below that are pictures of the wheels, with the "Simulated Wood Rim Steering Wheel" looking EXACTLY like the pic above with the green padded cap.
In fact, I obtained that pic (since I don't have a scanner right now to copy from the book) from a Mopar site of a member's car with the actual term S81 Simulated Wood Rim Steering Wheel delineated next to the pic.
In Paul Herd's Interchange Manual (68-74) the part number for the 70 and 71 Charger "Wheel Type: Simulated Wood Rim" is the same, 4016DDT.
IN FACT, that same part number wheel applies to 67-69 Barracudas, Belvederes, Chargers, Coronets, Darts, and Valiants, as well as 70-71 Chargers, Coronets, Fury(s), Polaras, Monacos, and Satellites.
As I said, that wheel was available in a lot of Mopars in a lot of years....70 and 71 Chargers being just a couple of them.
And now you even know the part number!! #2Thumbs#

Got any pics Glenn? Just for the sake of seeing what the 71 - 72 version looks like? What is the 70 pic of? It doesn't seem to be a Charger - judging by the door panels & seat covers. I have a couple of the wheels ('71-'72 style) in my storage if interested
