I've tried to disassemble the outside chrome mirrors on my 73 to get them replated, but haven't figured out how to get them apart. I believe I've got the passenger side apart. The driver's side remote of course is the one I can't figure out. How do you remove the cables without cutting them? The chrome guy said my mirrors were too trashed to get replated, but I'm not going to pay $300 a piece for new ones. If I can disassemble these, blast them, smooth them and paint them body color or silver like they did on the TV shows so there was no reflection on the backside.

Sure you can disassemble them. It is a royal pain in the Arse, but if you have patience it can be done. Look at the base of the joystick...you should see where the 3 cables are crimped in. You have to spread that crimp and then pull cable down and out, then up to disengage wire from joystick. BEFORE DISASSEMBLING, MARK ALL 3 CABLES AND WHERE THEY GO ON THE JOYSTICK. that will get the stick off and allow you to pull the cable thru the base, so the base and head can be separated and glass pedestal pulled out of the head. Its almost as fun as drilling spot welds.

You also want to spray the inside screws several times with penetrating oil before you try removing the screws that hold the two sections on the mirror housing together and also the screws behind the mirror glass . Mine were corroded and you don't want to snap one of those. Then you can use a offset screw driver and move the mirror glass itself to one side and reach behind it and remove those 2 screws (1 on each side) to remove the glass.

I'm so stuck on that that I have to find the way to remove the glass and get a direct access to screws with a straight screwdriver to get torque and remove. Screws are really stuck Glass plate has the holes to get the direct acces. Does somebody knows how to remove the glass without break ?

Nacho,...just FYI:
I ran into the same thing on an '81 Chevy El Camino I had, and I just broke the glass on purpose....did the repair I needed to do, then took it down to the local glass shop (not the dealer or an auto store), and had them cut a brand new mirror to fit the backing plate.
They cut the mirror glass, installed it on the plate (AFTER I had reassembled everything else) and I was Good To Go!! I think it cost me 6 dollars...this was about 5 years ago.
And, as a bonus, it was then a REAL mirror, and not that goofy "Objects In This Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear" convex crap-glass!!
Nacho, that's a true story...sounds goofy, but then, I'm Nothing, If Not Goofy!! #SillyMe#
Just my #Twocents#

I was thinking on that, but would preffer the original view since if not, I would get diff views on both mirrors

I was thinking on that, but would preffer the original view since if not, I would get diff views on both mirrors That's where you're wrong, Ol' Son... you already HAVE 2 different views if you have the "...closer than appear.." mirror!! THAT'S why I hate them...it's like wearing glasses that has two different prescription strength lenses...one for each eye!! I find myself constantly (mentally) changing my focus from the road (regular) to the drivers mirror (regular) to the inside rear view (regular), and then to that damn passenger mirror (convex, wide angle, distorted, etc.) SOB!! [SOB is an acronym for hijo de la chingada, Nacho....our little English lesson for today ] IF, and I repeat, IF you have the passenger replaced with regular (auto safety) mirror glass, THEN you WILL have both views the same....your driver's mirror is NOT a "...closer than appears..." mirror....at least it shouldn't be. If it is then some low-life changed it on you!! Hey, I'm just throwin' ideas at ya, my future Road Trip Compadre...if you have too much trouble, let me know and I'll send you another mirror for whicheve side you need (remote cable or not)...I'm serious, Nacho....(for some reason I find myself with a lot of extra parts all of a sudden!!) ;D Or you can wait and I'll give it to you in July...if you're not worried about the Security Whackos thinking it's a bomb and then strip-searching ya!! (I'll just add it on to the price of the Motorhome!!)

LOL well I know what is SOB... Son Of the B**H I'm trying to remove passenger side to get it to rechrome. and both mirrors sides I have are same glass angle/curve or whatever as far I know. need to compair better thought For some reason, Nacho, I thought 73's had the Closer Than Appears glass in the passenger mirror. I know for a fact my 72 440 car (tentatively named Petty Theft) has a regular auto glass mirror in the passenger side (Gracias A Dios!!)...with the same type of glass as the driver's side. Just for the sake of accuracy, (and I don't know what it means), but there is a very tiny number on the pass side (at the top of the mirror in the center) that reads 6-DMI-2. The number on the driver's side reads 2JC2...as I said, I have no idea what those little black numbers mean, if they're part numbers or what, but I just thought I would share that with you. I know that both of the mirrors on the 440 car could use rechroming (they're not bad or pitted or anything, they're just not perfect). When it comes time to chrome them, I'm going to try Stuga's method, but if worse comes to worse, I will have no problem in busting the glass and having it replaced, simply because I've been that road before and it was not a problem. Take care, and keep in mind my offer if you hit a dead end...of course I will want your old one and a 1000 dollars, but that's no big deal for a rich guy like you Nacho!! Shoot, I haven't even checked the Interchange Book...we may be talking about 2 different mirrors from the 72 to the 73...I'll have to check that. #oops#
