Hello all, Today I noticed a coolant leak out of one of the water pump housing mounting bolts. It's the bolt 2 above the lower radiator hose. It seems a bit odd to me, never seen that one before... Is it likely that its the housing gasket or do I need a new housing? Thanks guys for your help, almost done with all the gremlins

What engine are we talking about?
Never have seen a housing failure like that. Could be simply gasket or bolt itself.
Water pumps are easy to remove, so any reason for the leak, the job is the same, remove the pump and check.
Note: water pumps get a hole underneath the shaft area. This hole comunicates to the shaft “tunnel” and if the seal fails you can get coolant coming out from there. Then also running up to a bolt and dropping from there?

This would be a 440 engine. I'll take a picture and get back with it shortly. I suppose the pump and housing both need to come off to check it out. Very strange that a tight bolt leaks with a steady drip.
It's going to the tranny shop today, so it will be a bit later on. Thanks/Dennis

I was helping someone recently get his 440 running for the first time after a cam replacement years ago. When I arrived he said he had a pump/housing leak. I got under the car and stuck my phone/camera up to the pump and found the leak was coming from a bolt. Just dripping steadily out. Some of those bolts, if not all, need sealer on the threads.

Housing and pump are separated pieces on Big blocks. Diff from SBs. Yes a bolt can leak on BB water pumps since the bolt gets into the water chamber into the housing.
If you are sure is just the bolt, you can try just to remove the bolt and apply sealant to the threads.
HOWEVER, is not a huge job remove the BB water pump, clean surfaces and threads and reattach it back with fresh gasket and sealants. Can be made easily at home.

Thanks for the replys guys I've got a water pump, gasket, upper & lower hoses, & thermostat coming so I'm going to get all that done for peace of mind. I have a 1000 mile trip in December hopefully. When you say sealant do you mean RTV? Thanks, Dennis

I had the same issue and just used RTV to seal. You can also use ARP sealant. Make sure to clean the threads thoroughly and apply lots of the goop.

I was going to pitch in with the factory service manual info on this repair, but all I can find is a pump procedure...nothing for the housing. Closest I can find is a reference to the water pump ASSEMBLY in the time chain procedure.

When you say sealant do you mean RTV? Thanks, Dennis I, personally, like the Permatex #1 (I believe) on threads. There is a #1 & #2. It's the non-hardening brown stuff.
