Lamont and I got started building a small addition onto one of my storage buildings today. We are building it to store my engines and transmissions that are currently in a rental storage unit. Sure will be nice to not pay that $90 a month. Hopefully by the end of the week it will be finished. It is approximately 16x8. Definitely not a professional caliber job....but it should do the trick quite nicely. Initially I had planned on a concrete floor, but the time and expense to do it that way did not seem justified. A few pics....of our progress

Thats a great Start and size Tom..........are Those 2 x 6 floor boards? tat should be plenty strong....Now Load all the heavy motors in there before you put upthe walls as it easier before walls go up.... Do ou have to get building permits before you build where you live?......I can only go 8 x 12 without a permit where I live

That will be a great additional storage space. Will pay for itself pretty quickly too.

Steve, Yes..the flooring is 2x6`s . Can anyone explain why a 2x6 is really 1.5x5.5? We sunk the posts 2 feet and put them in concrete. Weather permitting, we will get back on it on Wednesday. Technically I probably should probably have gotten a permit. I did when I had the other building put up 2 years ago... In reality, the addition is not totally new construction. When I bought the house, there was an overhang (kind of like a car port) over the area where I am now building. In anticipation of adding a garage onto the building, that was all torn down. The storage building that I had put up 2 years ago has a cheap azz particle board floor...which I hate. Complete junk! I made Home Depot (actually their subcontractor) come back out and work on it several times. Floor warped, leaks....etc etc. My wife was amazed to see me outside doing something like this. I admittedly "play dumb" when it comes to home improvement projects. The more I admit that I can do...the more I will be asked to do.

Actually many years ago lumber was cut to be rough cut at 2x6......but was not dried lumber...and had the tendacy to shrink etc, and be full of bugs........Now it is rough cut to 2 x 6 then Kiln dried and it shrinks slightly and then is plained to finished dimension...the other reason is now that Modern engineering (actually decades ago) has calculated the need for less rigid suports they have calculated that a 2x 4 does not have to be 2x4 but a 1.5x3.5 spaced at 16" has a strong enough ability to handle a bearing load ....and with this reduction boards are easier to handle and they conserve lumber....
And if my wording seems off it is....I am very tired....very busy weekend!!..I am wiped!

Sure wished I could help. Bob, I`ll send ya a bus ticket. I`d send Lamont to pick you up....but he would would probably end up in Wyoming. The next project is pouring a concrete pad behind that building and putting a roof over it.
