My glove box lock just spins around. The only way to get it to open is to put a small screwdriver in it to engage the latch spring. Does anyone know if this is a problem with the lock or latch mechanism? My guess is the lock. If it is the lock can a locksmith match the tumblers on a replacement lock to my key so I won’t have to change my console and trunk locks? Thanks

When I got my '74 the rider side door lock had been ripped out and was gone so I bought a new one and had a local lock smith match the tumbler pins to the driver side. As Nacho mentioned, I seem to recall the chrome part you actually rotate to open the glove box door was loose on mine. Don't recall what I had to do to fix that.

Thanks Do you mean, it spins around with the key in the lock? My glove box can only be opened with the key in the lock. Otherwise the little handle spins around and doesn't open the door. I don't know if something is broken in my lock, or if it's supposed to be that way. This may be different from your problem, either way.

That is the chrome bezel loosen from the cylinder... as mentioned... hammer to apply the pressure back or epoxy On this pic you can see the smashed areas creating the pressure between chromed bezel and cylinder itself

Thanks for all the good info. I think it is the chrome part loose from the cylinder from the sounds of it.

I took the glove box door off. And got as far as trying to separate the latch/lock from the door. The little square access hole does not contain the release tab. There is nothing to push/depress in the opening . I have tried to spin the cylinder with the key in it. I have also tried spinning it with a screwdriver “and a bit more force” but nothing. I can only get it to move enough to release the latch “when it is in a closed position”. The chrome part continues to spin freely which is the original problem. I did notice that I can’t get the key to turn to “Lock” it. I suppose there is a chance the key doesn’t match the lock but doubtful. Any suggestions for getting this separated? I can buy a new lock if needed but would prefer not to damage the latch. Thanks

just can be done with the key, BUT OF COURSE THE CORRECT KEY, the matching one. Its on the opposite side and needs to be locked with lid open. Then you'll find the tab. Press it and insert the key again with tab pressed, then with all tabs pressed by the key ( including the locking one ) the cylinder will come out,
