I'm trying to see if the starter relay is set up correctly but it won't let me post the picture. On top I have the positive from the battery and the red power cable that goes to the interior. The middle is the ground for the starter. The bottom left goes to the wiring harness and the bottom right is connected to the trans

Middle is the starter motor solenoid wire
g terminal is the ground coming from trans just in P or N, safety system to not start on the negine with trans geared
I terminal is yellow wire from ign switch, to give the crank signal.

Do you know where the ground on the trans for the starter is supposed to be attached to. I found that it wasn't actually connected to anything

So glad that helped, the suspense was killing me waiting for you to pop back up on the site. LOL For what its worth I have two more tips, 1)think of the DC voltage on our cars as a loop. The positive voltage comes out of the positive side of the battery, it goes through the different devices (lights, radio, etc) and then it wants/needs to return to the battery to complete the "path" or circuit.
If the voltage doesn't make it back to the negative side of the battery, nothing happens. No lights, etc. If you connect a test light to the negative terminal on the battery and then touch the chassis of the car, you are using the test light to complete the path back to the battery if the ground is not connected. Electricity will always look for the path of least resistance, just like water.
2) Positive energy is something you feel when you do something nice for someone or something you get from a belief system. Positive voltage is what we get when we lick a 9 volt battery.
Very happy you are getting the electrical working and can now have more freedom to move forward working on your charger.
(just in case it wasn't clear, tip #2 was supposed to make you smile)

Lol yeah I got the joke there. Thank you for the help. I just need to get an actual ground in place because the makeshift ones are a pain in the butt. Still didn't fix everything electrical but I think that's partially because of the makeshift grounds I've used. It's the most progress I've made since I bought the car.

As far I recall the ground spot is a 1/4" nut on 20 thread ? ( 7/16" hex head for the bolt )... but can't recall correctly Did you find this bolt or the spot where it should be? Right between the radiator and driver's fender in front of battery. Should have the ground wires for the forward light harness attached to it. The negative pigtail attaches to that on a "71. "Trans ground" (neutral safety switch) is a plug that attaches to the drivers side of trans. Round black plug about the size of a quarter plugs on to the switch. Has 3 wires coming off of it. One to the starter relay (yellow wire),one to the back up lights and the 3rd should be a ground. You can see if the starter cranks by finding the small wire going to the starter solenoid and applying power to it from the positive post. Starter should crank until power is disengaged. Your starter relay could be inoperable, burnt inside after all these years. I took mine apart and cleaned the contacts inside.

Incorrect bud, the NSS plug carries 3 wires which are Positive coming from fuse block ( black wire ) Ground to starter relay in P or N ( brown with yellow trace wire ) Positve to back up lights ( black traced wire )
Positives are outer pins, ground is central pin.
Yellow wire comes from ign switch to the I terminal of starter relay

Yeah right, meant positive. I was very tired last night. Positive powers the back up lights when in reverse. Starter relay gets grounded when in park or neutral to complete circuit to turn on relay which then sends power to starter solenoid.

Oh ok no wonder. My car is missing that plug that goes on the trans. And yes I have been able to get the engine to turn over by connecting it straight to the battery.
